Nearly three years after Paramount cleared it for take off in theaters, Top gun 2 is finally set to release on May 27, 2022. Ahead of the film’s premiere, Paramount is doing everything to make sure that no one forgets that Tom Cruise will star in a high-flying action flick that’s not named Mission: Impossible. The latest Maverick trailer is an exercise in pure and unabashed fan service. After wowing audiences with its first few minutes last year at CinemaCon 2021, the latest look at the Top Gun sequel is aimed squarely at striking that nostalgia nerve as it brings up Val Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, who is now an Admiral. Maverick’s former rival has a new job as the top-ranking pilot while the trailer takes audiences on a trip through the fresh faces of Top Gun 2 including Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, and many more. It appears that the extra time spent by the film’s director and editors in the cutting room to work on the aerial dogfights was worth it. We won’t exactly know how good the film’s flying sequences will appear on the silver screen, but you can feel how much work was put into ensuring authenticity. A few days ago, Empire Magazine treated fans to a few new images featuring Cruise’s now-Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his late best friend’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, who is now part of the prestigious Naval Fighter Weapons School, TOPGUN. The long-overdue sequel is shaping up to be the kind of film with the right balance of nostalgia and new ideas, using a combination of actual fighter jets and CGI to pull off jaw-dropping sequences that should guarantee Cruise another hit action flick under his belt. Speaking of Cruise, the Mission: Impossible actor’s next two installments in Paramount’s high-budget series of action and espionage films are currently in the works. However, fans are worried that Mission: Impossible 7 might not live up to expectations following reports that the production budget has ballooned up to $290 million while still in post-production with over a year to go before it arrives in theaters on July 14, 2023.
