Now, it appears that they’ve given Paramount Pictures enough reason to greenlight a sequel that will be here in just a little over a year following Scream 5’s premiere. Scream 5’s success came as a total shock to a lot of people. After several production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the requel, as the movie calls it, finally hit theaters on January 14 and stabbed its way to the top of the box office, and became the first film to oust Spider-Man: No Way Home. With $139 million made at the global box office and a 76% Rotten Tomatoes score, the new Scream was just begging for a sequel, but fans probably didn’t expect it to come so soon. According to Deadline, Paramount has confirmed that another pair of mask-wearing serial killers will be up to no good on March 31, 2022, which might be an intentional homage to the first two Scream films. Both Scream movies were released just a year apart in 1996 and 1997. Although this should have spelled disaster for the sequel, the exact opposite ended up happening. To date, Scream 2 still has the highest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes of all five films, which bodes well for Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. You might be wondering which of the survivors from the soft reboot will be back for the requel-sequel (or is it resequel?). Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer to that question just yet. We do know that Courteney Cox should be back as Gale Weathers as she was technically the first to reveal that Scream 6 will start filming in June.  Most likely, this also means that the OG final girl, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott will return alongside her successor, Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter. Plot details for Scream 6 are slim at the moment, but after Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett should deliver in furthering the long-running masked slasher movies to reach new heights. If we were to speculate, the reboot’s sequel might take notes from Scream 2 and see a pair of copycat killers take up the knife and mask following the first film’s release. For now, all Scream fans can do is wait for more information. If what Cox said is true and filming starts in June, Paramount could have a trailer up and running just in time for the Halloween season. For those who miss David Arquette following the death of his character (oops), Dewey Riley, in Scream 5, you can catch him alongside a bunch of other teenagers in Supermassive Games’ upcoming interactive horror game, The Quarry, which will hit store shelves on June 10.
